Even when circumstances change, you may still suffer as though circumstances have not changed because you no longer believe things can get better and you make no effort to change with the circumstances.  Usually this refers to learning helplessness by experience, but in the case of optometry, helplessness is taught to us by the professionals who say there is nothing that can be done besides wearing stronger [[glasses]].
