Thanks to everyone who has done a terrific job on getting the wiki up to scratch. Definitely a team effort, and I think it's paid off quite nicely. Admin specific: the next two to four weeks will be a good barometer of how much vandalism can be expected over time, and whether things need to be changed or not. I'm heavily in favour of keeping it 'create an account, make an edit', but if need be there can be additional restrictions.

Try to check in on Special:RecentChanges every once in a while to see if anything unsavoury is happening. I might be overestimating the amount of vandalism we'll get, we must wait and see. Don't be afraid to block users if necessary.

I am prone to migraines and have a strong response to that sort of visual thing myself. I did a study where they tested my pain response and I did better than most people.  Then they flashed lights at me, and I did worse than most people (asked them to stop the flashing lights a LOT sooner) and got a bad migraine.  And I have it easy!

P.S. The standardized ways of still having animated gifs  are to have an "off" option or to have gifs that stop being animated after no more than 5 seconds.

:Angel You removed a gif of a man shaking his head and a SpongeBob character slowly coming out of a door. I don't see how images such as those could cause severe migraines as you've said - if they do you should be configuring your web browser to suit your needs imo. I can kind of see where you were coming from with the fireworks on the points mean prizes page.

I just agreed to the terms of use over in the discord, and the last rule was about creating a welcoming space. That's my area of expertise, creating spaces that are welcoming for everyone. I do this professionally.  This is about creating a welcoming space for the most vulnerable wiki users.
:I'm not sure if you have access to the thread on the forum where I discuss the backend and configuration a little more. I'm currently waiting to get backend access to configure the MediaWiki install - the wiki is hosted on Jake's file server and I don't have FTP access at the moment. As you can imagine, there are plenty of extensions and configurations I'd like to do, and Cite will definitely be added.

ProveIt
It doesn't hurt the existing wiki users to use images that don't give people seizuresBut it might give someone a seizure if we leave them there. Like, that's fine when we don't know betterBut once we know better, we have a responsibility to do better.
Not sure if any of this is fixable, but ProveIt has a few foibles.
* It sometimes reverses the first and last name of the author.  That one I doubt is fixable, because not everyone will use the same text formatting everywhere, so it would have to know as much as a human about names(Although it might be able to learn more about common first and last names in other cultures than I know myself if it could do it at all.)
* The Journal template doesn't like partial dates like 2010 DecIt wants the day, but the day isn't always known, many of the articles cite only a year or month and year. That might be fixable in the template? Dlskidmore (talk) 02:26, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Test
Just like I don't want my optometrist to give me a prescription that's going to make my eyes worse, I don't want be responsible for maybe giving people a seizure.

:Caching is enabled across the wiki, PARTICULARLY for anonymous users. Open up incognito and start clicking on things. EndMyopia Wiki: Launched!

Thanks to everyone who has done a terrific job on getting the wiki up to scratch. Definitely a team effort, and I think it's paid off quite nicely. Always more to be done, but the basics look pretty taken care of. Wiki's looking good. We're on the front page of the main site, it's been promoted in Facebook and there should be a video coming out at some point.

Cheers! -NottNott (talk) 08:53, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Help:Pictures

Suggest you make $wgAllowExternalImages false. Image hosts can and not infrequently do, convert all linked images to ads, porn or worse. It's only one line of config code for a host to replace all incoming links with a different image. Viceroy Sam (talk) 09:57, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

@Viceroy Sam: Pending Okay, will do. I have rough concerns in how it can be abused for sure. -NottNott (talk) 10:07, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Page footer

The page footer on this wiki wants to be stonger worded. Maybe like the Wikipedia footer "By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy". Viceroy Sam (talk) 14:51, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

@Viceroy Sam:  Doneish, no preamble, but hard links to the things where there were originally none. -NottNott (talk) 17:21, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Excellent fast work. Could Terms of Use be added to the mobile footer. Viceroy Sam (talk) 22:44, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Edit

Overreaction much?? Viceroy Sam (talk) 16:01, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

@Viceroy Sam: Oh yeah just realised that stops the writing system lol. Okay will undo that and fix the abuse filter instead. -NottNott (talk) 16:28, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Banned from Forum

I created a forum account yesterday, and it was banned for no reason, before I even had a chance to set up a profile picture.

Anyway, on my user page, I wrote an introduction that I would have posted, which provides my insights about blur adaptation.

@User: Do you know what your username was on the forum? I can totally look into this for you. If your username was 'User' there's a strong chance the system filtered it out. -NottNott (talk) 01:36, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
It was something like a-user. Maybe it was the masked email that they didn't like?
@User: That should be approved for you now, I found your email in the blocked account logs. Let me know if it works now - your intro sounds good for the forum -NottNott (talk) 22:39, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I had already deleted that email. Also, I tried to sign up using another one, but it says my IP address is banned.
@User: You should be allowed now. -NottNott (talk) 23:11, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
I've created my account, and it needs a mod to approve.

Animated gifs trigger seizures

Animated gifs trigger epileptic reactions and migraines in some people.

Alt text won't fix this. Alt text is useful if you need a screen reader.

Maybe we can work together to find static gifs to replace them? I would have done so myself, but I don't have the wiki skillz. Thanks, Angel (talk) 23:25, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

P.S. The standardized ways of still having animated gifs are to have an "off" option or to have gifs that stop being animated after no more than 5 seconds.

Angel (talk) 23:31, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

@Angel: You removed a gif of a man shaking his head and a SpongeBob character slowly coming out of a door. I don't see how images such as those could cause severe migraines as you've said - if they do you should be configuring your web browser to suit your needs imo. I can kind of see where you were coming from with the fireworks on the points mean prizes page.
I think the wiki is good with colourful variety that does not cause issues for the overwhelming majority of readers. Like we could put the wiki in Comic Sans as well to help dyslexic readers, but they really should be configuring their own browser. I hope you see where I'm coming from -NottNott (talk) 23:42, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

I just agreed to the terms of use over in the discord, and the last rule was about creating a welcoming space. That's my area of expertise, creating spaces that are welcoming for everyone. I do this professionally. This is about creating a welcoming space for the most vulnerable wiki users.

I see where you're coming from, been there. But what about people who use library computers, shared computers, or other public computers? What about people who don't know how to use computers? What about people who don't know what gives them migraines or seizures?

It doesn't hurt the existing wiki users to use images that don't give people seizures. But it might give someone a seizure if we leave them there. Like, that's fine when we don't know better. But once we know better, we have a responsibility to do better.

Just like I don't want my optometrist to give me a prescription that's going to make my eyes worse, I don't want be responsible for maybe giving people a seizure. Angel (talk) 00:02, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

P.S. I am confident in our powers of imagination to find some sweet non-animated gifs. Can you help me find and put in some replacements that stop after 5 seconds or that don't move?

Angel (talk) 00:04, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Compromise suggestion: Put animated GIFs in collapsible elements that are collapsed by default. I haven't tried it yet on this wiki, but it looks like the instructions are here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Collapsible_elements

@Kg6gfq: I have no idea where you came from but that's a brilliant idea. -NottNott (talk) 00:44, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

@Angel:  Done Thanks to Kg6gfq's amazing idea (seriously where did you come from man) every single gif on every article in the wiki is now collapsible fulfilling WCAG 2.0 SC 2.2.2. -NottNott (talk) 01:19, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Yay! Glad it was helpful. I'm Angel's partner. She was telling me about this and said something like "there must be a technical solution but I don't know what it is" so I did a little searching. MediaWiki has a pretty decent manual. Quick work applying it to all the gifs, NottNott - that's awesome! Kg6gfq (talk) 02:26, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

The internet is a better place. Thank you kg6gfq for knowing where to point us, thank you NottNott for implementing it like instantly. Team work!
