Jake Steiner

Jake Steiner is the pseudonymous name^[1] of the creator of EndMyopia. In his own words he is a self styled retired stock trader who made a website to help others regain their 20/20 eyesight, after having completely reversed his 5 diopter myopia.^[2]

History

On his now defunct blog titled ‘cedonulli — tales of loot and booty’, Jake Steiner detailed in an article his vision improvement journey. He says that he started with four diopters of myopia in his right eye, and three and a half in his left one, contradicting his oft-repeated 5 diopters figure.^[3] He enrolled in Alex Frauenfeld's Frauenfeld Clinic's rehab program for myopia and was able to reduce his prescription by an entire diopter in both eyes in a three month span.^[3]

Jake says:

“All thanks to this Austrian guy, Alex Frauenfeld, who is a *genius*. He gave me the whole rundown, how myopia (nearsightedness) is a stress symptom, and how wearing prescription lenses turns a temporary problem into a (mostly) permanent one. He sent me research on chickens, stories of Russian draft dodgers with perfect vision using glasses to ruin their eyes, the whole bit. Apparently fucking up my eyes wasn’t medically necessary, especially if optometry at large wasn’t a fucking for-maximum-profit, fix-problem-dark-ages-style business. Ass. Holes.

Alex Frauen-genius-feld has this whole program to rehab eyeballs. And no, it’s not crazy-man Bates method stare-into-the-sun. Lots of stuff about corrective stress and focus exercises, and peripheral stuff and gradients and whatever else. I’ve been doing more or less most of it. Though apparently my results aren’t what I’m told to expect to continue to happen at the same rate, since, he says, my prescription was ‘loaded up’:

You go get ‘your eyes checked’, they stick you in a dark room, put that Snellen test in front of you. Get you the highest possible prescription. Then you go back to work, looking at a computer screen all day. Nobody tells you that your vision is worst in the dark, and when you have no peripheral vision. Nobody tells you that using a minus prescription when focused up close fries your eyes. So you come back a year later and get the next dose of higher prescription, overpriced glasses. Suckahs!”^[3]

Crucially, Jake lamented how Alex's proficiency in technology-related matters was lacking, and he wished that they'd create a good online program or resource.^[3]

Alex Frauenfeld's real life identity was exposed online on a blogpost hosted on April 2014 indicating that he's a professional and licensed ophthalmologist from Iowa, after which his online presence faded away.

He calls himself a guru unironically and has a pet collective noun for his readers. He has a financial incentive to make the blog archives hard to parse. Also, the blog archives are hard to parse. He has also been making a concerted effort to move the community's conversations into forums which are not publicly accessible, and he enforces strong groupthink within those private groups. He comes across as a cult leader who is trying to keep his flock from straying. I honestly have no idea whether it's malicious but it is hugely damaging to the mainstream uptake of these ideas.”
