Explainer:Why you shouldn't support Jake Steiner (endmyopia)

This page contains drama and won't improve your eyesight. Feel free to keep reading if you are interested.

The reduced lens method, as taught on endmyopia.org does fundamentally work. However, there are some concerns about its creator, Jake Steiner and actions he has taken toward the community.

Paywalling EM Wiki

All sales pages were updated in two days, definitely a temporary thing and not a permanent way to make more money off of community contributions /s
A post made by Jake two days after paywalling the wiki initially

Jake placed EM Wiki under a paywall without consulting any editors. He removed all user rights from everyone, making him the sole admin. This alienated many people who had contributed up to this point, and the original creator of the EM Wiki who previously worked with Jake (NottNott) created this site in response, as it seemed like the information on the wiki would be pay to access forever.

Jake claimed he was facing 'six figure lawsuits' from concerned parents online, unhappy that their children were getting eyesight advice from untrustworthy sources online. He also said that he wanted to get the wiki back to being freely available as soon as possible. However, he made sure to update all the sales pages and promotion posts very quickly to make sure the wiki was being monetised. This did not look like a temporary measure, but rather a permanent change in strategy for how the wiki would be visible moving forward.

Within two weeks this position had entirely reversed, coincidentally after this fork of the wiki was established. Original EM Wiki was being promoted even more than it was previously, free to access. This makes it clear Jake decided it was fine to paywall the wiki and lie about the reason, especially as nothing substantive was edited on EM Wiki that would stop a further 'lawsuit' in the future.

Censoring everything

Don't ask Jake about Alex Frauenfeld, or you get that padlock next to your thread. Potentially banned too

Jake will readily shut down and ban anything in overt or underhanded ways. These include:

  • Saying that Endmyopia doesn't get to the point
  • Talking about other eyesight improvement methods
  • Demoting your forum rank without telling you if you say something Jake doesn't like
  • Privating the entire /r/endmyopia subreddit because someone posted a link to this wiki
  • You ask about Alex Frauenfeld or the Frauenfeld Clinic

He will go onto make personal attacks against people who do these things in a snarky, passive aggressive way.

Personal attacks, legal threats, plutonium-laden rants

Not sporting
Not an efficient allocation of resources

Jake threatened to turn the original creator of the EM Wiki, who did a lot of professional work for free on the wiki, into a Utah Nuclear Testing Ground for making this wiki fork.

The wiki, at the time of the fork had around 12,000 edits. 4 of those edits were made by Jake, none of which were constructive. Jake did no work on any articles, or the backend for the wiki at all, except for hosting the site. Without this fork, it is concievable Jake would have kept all of those 11,996 contributions he didn't make locked behind a paywall where he makes all of the profit. Apparently this wiki is the one that is stealing, though, and deserves punishment for its crimes.

He claims to have spent over five figures in legal fees to shut this website down, despite the fact he consented to the wiki being under a free to use and share license since its inception. This is a clear attempt at intimidation, as such a case would have no legal merit.

He would assault the original creator of the wiki given the chance

'Confident he wouldn't enjoy the consequences if he did this in real life with me nearby.' - Jake Steiner, saying he would assault the original creator of EM Wiki if he could

Threats of physical violence are not ok. By saying you would assault someone, you are saying you would be fine with putting that person and their family in major trouble by potentially hurting or killing them permanently.

He lies about having created Endmyopia (Frauenfeld Clinic)

Jake says this was always his idea
And that he's been doing this for 20 years
Why is he saying that he only started this in June 2012 then? Did he do nothing for nine years?

Jake claims that he has been doing this for over 20 years. The Frauenfeld Clinic, the clear inspiration for Endmyopia essentially taught Jake everything he is now teaching.

On Jake's old blog, he gives Alex a lot of credit for helping him improve his eyes, in very specific detail. These are also dated to 2012, which is where he started writing about eyesight on his now deleted blog, cedonulli.com. This would contradict him doing this for 20 years.

Jake claims Alex Frauenfeld was a frontman and Jake was the original creator of everything all along.

Asking Jake about any of this will get you a passive-aggressive response, a ban, and he'll probably go and complain about it on his pay to access forum, where everyone feels like they must be nice to Jake and support his beliefs otherwise they will be banned.
